Rubin's Vase
This illusion was created from a photograph of Victoria Skye's profiles.
The face/vase, figure - ground illusion was developed around 1915 by the Danish Psychologist Edgar Rubin.
When the profiles are placed with a gap in between, it creates an illusion of a vase in the middle.
This is an ambiguous illusion. It gives the viewer a choice of interpretations based on the foreground or background information and demonstrates our ability to shift interpretations. We can see one or the other but not both at the same time.
